The Eugene Debs video was created by David Maegerlein and Kyle Smith. Tracy Ford provided all the music for the video. Dr. Charles King was the main narrator, along with David Maegerlein. Kyle Smith filmed and edited the video. The purpose of the video is to give some information about who Eugene Debs was. It starts out showing him as a young man working as a painter on the rail roads. Soon after, he realized that the treatment of workers was unfair and sought to join a Union. In 1894, Debs was involved in the Pullman Strike and sentenced to serve 6 months in prison. While in imprisoned, he read the works of Karl Marx and became a Socialist. When Debs was released, he ran for President on the socialist ticket in 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920. Debs gave a speech denouncing involvement in the War and was arrested for violation of the Espionage Act of 1917. Debs was sentenced to serve 10 years in Prison. While imprisoned, debs ran for president in the 1920 election, but did not win. He was released from prison in 1921 on Christmas Day. |
