Abstract |
Letter to Marie Debs Heinl, 10/21/1927. Writes that he appreciated the copy of Eugene V. Debs' book WALLS AND BARS that he sent. Tells Heinl that he has read the book with great interest and found it "positively thrilling." Says that while he does not accept Eugene V. Debs' philosophy in general he does agree with him that there is a great need for prison reform. Remarks that he was at one time the chaplain at a penitentiary in Wyoming. Writes that while he was there he was able to put through some reforms at the institution with the cooperation of the warden. Mentions that the prisoners gave him a gold-topped cane when he left the prison. Expresses the hope that WALLS AND BARS gets into the hands of people who are able to carry out some of the reforms Eugene V. Debs suggests in his book. |
