Abstract	Copy of letter to Abraham Lillienthal, 12/20/1919. Informs Lillienthal that the only way that he could see a writ of habeas corpus applying to Eugene V. Debs's situation is in regard to the "improper" removal of Eugene V. Debs from Moundsville, West Virginia to Atlanta, Georgia. Says that he thought about pursuing the matter at the time Eugene V. Debs's transfer took place but that the Department of Justice would have just rationalized the move as a precautionary measure since there were several people advocating the use of physical force in attaining the release of Eugene V. Debs. Tells Lillienthal that he received inside information that Eugene V. Debs will be released as soon as a peace treaty is ratified by Congress. Writes that Eugene V. Debs's prison sentence cannot be abrogated since the law under which he was convicted was legal at the time of his arrest. Remarks that because of this Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.'s opinion will not be much help to getting political prisoners released.
