Abstract	Letter to Eugene V. Debs on Socialist Party letterhead, 04/04/1921. Writes that the sizes of the Socialist Party's petitions for amnesty are not what he would have liked them to be. Tells Eugene V. Debs that the demonstration must not be put off. Remarks that the Socialist Party's amnesty campaign is being sabotaged by Samuel Gompers and Lucy Robins. Assures Eugene V. Debs that the Socialist Party has made every effort to work with Lucy Robins. Writes that the Industrial Workers of the World and the communists also oppose the Socialist Party's amnesty campaign because they object to asking for or accepting amnesty from a capitalist government. Says that he wished that there was a united militant group within the Socialist Party that could withstand these critics. Remarks that Norman Hapgood is working earnestly on behalf of amnesty even though he is writing for a publication owned by William Randolph Hearst. Mentions that Norman Hapgood is working for amnesty in his own way. Says that he does not think Norman Hapgood, a writer for a Hearst publication, Samuel Gompers, or Lucy Robins will hold much sway with a Republican administration in the first place on the amnesty issue. Tells Eugene V. Debs that the only way amnesty can be secured from the President is by having radical groups make a fight. Mentions that Warren Harding and Harry Daugherty met with representatives from the Socialist Party on 04/13/1921. Assures Eugene V. Debs that the war hysteria is dying down. Informs Eugene V. Debs that the Socialist Party has never been weaker. Says that this weakness is a result of the war. Writes that the members of the Socialist Party needs to learn to work together. Remarks that although Eugene V. Debs indicated in a previous letter that he thought that the Socialist Party was making a mistake in its amnesty campaign he did not say how so. Says that he inferred from Eugene V. Debs's letter that the Socialist Party needs to work more closely with Lucy Robins. Mentions that the Socialist Party is being assisted by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Industrial Workers of the World's General Defense Committee, the Inter-Collegiate Socialist Society, Norman Thomas, and John Haynes Holmes. Remarks that he would like to come to Atlanta, Georgia to discuss this matter over with Eugene V. Debs in person.
