Abstract	Letter to Marguerite Debs Cooper, 09/12/1947. Writes that he appreciated Cooper's praise for his book. Says that he would like a chance to respond to what Cooper and Gertrude Debs did not like about the book. Assures Cooper that he was not passing judgment on Eugene V. Debs when he referred to his drinking. Tells Cooper that he does not think that it is a horrible crime to drink. Writes that he does not condone alcoholism but is not morally opposed to drinking either. Remarks that there is considerable evidence that Eugene V. Debs missed his meeting with the US marshal because he had been out drinking. Says that there is also considerable evidence that Eugene V. Debs drank quite a bit in Girard, Kansas when Eugene V. Debs was so unhappy over his marriage. Tells Cooper that there was just no one way for him to ignore the fact that Eugene V. Debs occasionally drank. Writes that he has already heard from one reviewer who thought that he "whitewashed" over Eugene V. Debs' weaknesses and failures. Remarks that he is going to New York City, New York on 10/08/1947 to launch the book. Says that he is glad that Cooper enjoyed his appearance on TOWN MEETING OF THE AIR. Asks that Cooper not let the drinking in the book lessen her opinion of the potential it has for "continuing the fight in our cruel and chaotic world for all those things" that Eugene V. Debs and Theodore Debs stood for.
