Abstract	Letter from Theodore Debs, 04/23/1944. Says that he remembers well the story Stedman told about Marguerite Debs Cooper. Tells Stedman that neither Gertrude Debs nor Marguerite Debs Cooper smoke. Writes that he has not smoked in 4 years. Says that at one time he smoked "as many as 20 cigars in a day." Remarks that he remembers when Marguerite Debs Cooper embarrassed him by giving away the fact that Eugene V. Debs was around when he was trying to tell a perfect stranger that he was not. Says that while penicillin will not help his generation that it will help future generations, even if it has no other virtues than curing venereal diseases. Tells Stedman that he does not think that W. P. Borland had been able to write since his stroke. Mentions that he was very sorry to hear about the death of Art Young. Assures Stedman that world will miss Art Young's humor and cartoons. Says that he received an announcement saying that James Maurer had died. Tells Stedman that the "loss of a single friend--I don't mean just an acquaintance--but friends, friends that know you and have stood and withstood the test of time; who stood by, not aside, in every hour of need--becomes more and more painful as we grow older and as friends become fewer with each passing year." Writes that to the end he is sure that neither he nor Stedman will raise the white flag.
