About the Collection

Wabash Valley Visions & Voices is a digital memory project focused on the Wabash Valley region in west central Indiana and east central Illinois. Its mission is to document and preserve the history and cultural heritage of the region in a digital format made accessible through the World Wide Web. Local libraries, archives, historical societies and museums are contributing to the searchable database that contains images linked to descriptive information referred to as metadata. The database holds still and moving pictures, artifacts, manuscripts, yearbooks, and printed texts, that are both historic and recent in origin.

Through the project's website you may link to the homepage of each contributor; browse individual collections; browse by subject category; or search any or all of the collections for specific topics. The subject categories are based on those developed by the Indiana Digital Library Summit, a group composed of library, museum and education professionals from across Indiana. The goal of the Summit is to establish a digital library for the state of Indiana. Wabash Valley Visions & Voices conforms to the digitization and metadata standards developed by the Summit and the project is designed to fit seamlessly with the proposed Indiana Digital Library when it comes online.

The Visions Project (also known as WV3) is based at Indiana State University Library, which provides the collection management software, the server space for storage and specialized staff members, who assist in the digitization of material and who create the metadata. The project is powered by CONTENTdm, a digital collection management software. WV3 also serves as a Resource Connection for the Smart Desktop Initiative developed by the Indiana Humanities Council to provide digital assets in support of K-12 instruction.
