Twenty-two representatives from the Wabash Valley Visions & Voices Project’s eighteen partners attended the WV3 Winter Partners Meeting at the Indiana State University Library on February 15, 2006. The afternoon gathering included a box lunch, announcements, project updates, a speaker and three break-out sessions devoted to the Memorandum of Understanding, Full Resolution Archiving/Metadata Issues, and Collection Development. Distributed at the meeting were server statistics indicating the total number of items per collection and their format, and the "Indiana Digital Library Content Advisory Workshop Report." At the time of the meeting there were 19,619 items in the Visions Project database. Usage statistics relating to individual collections were e-mailed to partners prior to the meeting. Project updates Cinda May shared with attendees the information concerning the 2006 round of LSTA mini-digitization grants that she had received at the February 7, 2006 LSTA workshop held at the Indiana State Library. May briefly outlined the proposal that she is writing to document Indiana coal mining. If successful, the grant will fund the digitization and metadata creation of material related to coal mining in the collections of the Coal Town Museum, the Clinton Public Library, the Vigo County Historical Society, the Sisters of Providence Archives, Sullivan County Public Library, the Dugger Coal Museum and the Knox County Public Library. The proposal includes the creation of oral histories and community history days. Amy Jackson demonstrated to the audience changes and enhancements to the WV3 web site. A project logo has been adopted and will be used on all official project business correspondence and publications. The logo also appears with the IHC Resource Connection metadata records created for items harvested from the Visions Project. WV3 will be the Featured Resource Partner in March. A brief article about the project will appear in the IHC smartDESKTOP newsletter as well as on the Resource Connection web site. Each partner now has an individual web page with links to items of interest and browse and search features. The homepage of the Visions Project now includes a “Current Item of Interest” feature that takes a visitor to all of the material within the project that relates to a specific topic. For February the link highlights Black History Month. There was also a “Happy Valentine’s Day” link that retrieved all of the Valentine postcards in the Vigo County Historical Society collection. "Preserved
Memories: A dream that's becoming reality" Norbert Brown, Chair of the Transportation Department at Vincennes University, recently developed a passion for Vincennes history. His presentation, “Preserved Memories: A Dream that is becoming Reality,” described his adventures gathering photographs, 1927 Sandborn Fire Insurance Maps, city directories, newspapers and other primary source material with the intent to produce an interactive web site that will allow the visitor to explore the neighborhoods of Vincennes in any given year. The project is still in its infancy and software is being designed at Vincennes University that will provide a template for use in documenting not only Vincennes, but other cities and towns. Norbert’s PowerPoint slides demonstrate the scope of the project. For additional information about this interesting and exciting project contact Norbert at nbrown@vinu.edu. Discussion Groups Memorandum of Understanding The Memorandum of Understanding group reviewed the 11/16/05 draft document. An additional seven points will be added to the MoU. A final draft will be distributed for review. If there are no further corrections or additions the document will be prepared for signing. Collection Development The Collection Development group discussed copyright issues, the growing size of the project’s database and ways to cultivate under-represented subjects. Each partner was asked to submit a statement outlining the amount material that the partner intended to add to the Visions Project during the next year. Almost 20,000 objects are in the hopper for inclusion in 2006/2007. Pro-active collection building in specific areas will be explored as a means to bolster specific subject areas. Full Resolution Archiving/Metadata The full resolution archiving/metadata group discussed the full resolution archiving function of ContentDM. Other topics included full resolution images, tab delimited text import, compound objects, and experiences with the Acquisition Station software. Return to Winter Partners Meeting. |
