A Civil War Murder
This Civil War historical marker marking the "Civil War Murder" is located on US 63 in Fairbanks, Indiana. It is located on the north side of town and on the east side of the road. In 1992, the Historical Bureau and Sullivan County Historical Society erected the marker.
The Marker reads: “Numerous Violent conflicts erupted in Sullivan County during the Civil war over differing war sentiments. On July 14, 1864, anti-war Democrat John Drake was fatally shot at a community picnic near here. The Union soldier who shot Drake was apparently never prosecuted.”
